City Pop Radio: Eiichi Ohtaki's A Long Vacation

I remember when I first listened to this album because I saw an article that said it is quite possibly the best Japanese album of all time. Then I was blown away. And it does receive much love and acclaim every single time it is given the chance. This is another city pop classic and standard. This is Eiichi Ohtaki's A Long Vacation.
So much of this album reminds me of The Beach Boys. Specifically, Pet Sounds. I can just hear The Beach Boys tearing up opening track "Kimi wa Tennenshoku." It's just a confection of fun. It gives me unbridled joy. Grab your emotional surf boards because be prepared to be hit with a pacific wave of nostalgia while you listen. Every track is given such care and attention. It's a treat.
"Velvet Motel" is campy. The vocals here are emotional and groovy. Eiichi Ohtaki himself is tinged in rock and roll. The real spirit of the genre. The sound of A Long Vacation is so broad and all-encompassing yet tightly crafted.
"Canaria Shoto Nite" has an updated 60s throwback vibe to it. It's sweet, y'all. The vocal layering on the chorus will leave you with a sweet tooth.
Many artists have cited this record as an influence. And Rolling Stone Japan named it one of the greatest Japanese rock albums of all time. It also won Best Album at the 23rd Japan Record Awards.
At 10 tracks. the record is a quick listen that leaves you wanting more. Yet is so perfect you want things to stay just as they are. And that thrill stays listen after countless listen.

Rating: S Rank! Go take A Long Vacation!
