City Pop Radio: Takako Mamiya's Love Trip
During the City Pop Radio segment, we will talk about city pop albums and songs! City pop has really taken off on the internet sphere as a genre to watch and has dedicated fans. Today we will be talking about Takako Mamiya's Love Trip.
This album has been a city pop staple for years now. I don't even remember how I was introduced to this album. What I do remember is that this album has been played on many car rides. Especially on those late nights. City pop is the sound of the night. Whether you're singing along, listening in the shower, or need a soundtrack for the background, it has you covered. This album has all of that. The title track opening is illustrious. So very lush.
"Chinese Restaurant" probably inspired Harry Styles's city-pop-inspired Harry's House. Just a hunch. "All or Nothing" is another fun, slick offering.
Takako has a velvety voice that fits the synths and gloss of the album. It's weird how something that wasn't popular 40 years ago suddenly has a cult-following.
Something to note of the singer about this album is that it was a mystery of what has become of the singer. No, seriously. Google it. Do some digging if you're interested. She doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. She apparently retired after this release and got married. I hope Takako sees the response her album has gotten and feels proud and accomplished. She's truly created something gorgeous here.
Rating: A Rank. I go on many Love Trips.
