City Pop Radio: Akimoto Kaoru's Cologne
With the City Pop boom of late last decade to early this decade, we have been re-discovering gems that should have received their flowers back in the day. Though better late than never! Back in 1986, Akimoto Kaoru debuted with this sharply produced piece of pop coolly titled Cologne.
Cologne possesses an 80s flare that is well-known from the decade as told through a Japanese lens. It effortlessly blends Japan's kayokyoku sound with sounds popular in the west (think Toto's "Africa"). It was unpopular during its initial release though has seen various re-releases and remasters since then.
There's something so black-tie and being chauffeured about this album. It's slick. It makes you feel rich. I love it. And each track blends into the next with such sophistication that it makes the whole album feel like an event with how it pays attention to the smallest details. Like just check out that transition from "Narcissist" to "Dress Down." So very slick.
Akimoto's voice itself is so untainted and crystal clear. She possesses such a pretty voice. And her vocal performance is outstanding while she portrays such emotion. Even when she gets serious.
"Narcissist" is pop perfection. Pure and simple. Giving it a listen might just change your life. Then there's the sexy "Dress Down." "Two Call" is a ballad ahead of its time. Then you have the playful "Wagamama na High Heels."
Give Cologne a listen when you can. It's a wonderful album from top to bottom. I don't think you'll regret it!
