Ear Candy: beabadoobee's This Is How Tomorrow Moves
Recently, artists have been releasing their "For Your Consideration" Grammy posters. One that caught my eye was beabadoobee's. I had never heard of her previously, and I was eager to check out some newer acts. So it all lead me to This Is How Tomorrow Moves. And wow! I love this project so much.
It may be strange to some, but if I had to compare beabadoobee to another artist I would pick YUI. Probably because they both have these sweet, angelic voices. And they share sound many times.
beabadoobee is in her own lane, though. This Is How Tomorrow Moves is a confessional, personal effort. Be blown away by "Take A Bite." Seriously. The writing is top-notch. It has great hooks. The vocal delivery is very unique.
"California" has this cool opening that reminds me a little of when you were a kid and you used pots and pans as drums. That doesn't do it justice. But it's a little trippy like that. The contrast of sweet vocals and harder rock is such a cool duality.
I think the highlight of this project is the lyrics. It's so real world. It's the little secrets of your every day life that you may not tell others. Or how you tell others just in passing. And beabadoobee's delivery just highlights every word and every single lyric. Just give "Coming Home" a spin and see what I mean.
And there's so much beauty here on this record. "Ever Seen" is just gorgeous. The vocal effects are so bright and clear.
I really enjoyed this record. The indie vibe it has going on is perhaps its greatest strength along with its lyrics. So if you really like storytelling through song, I highly recommend this.
Rank: B Rank
