Song Spotlight: Britney Spears' "3"
In honor of the legendary Miss Britney Spears' new memoir being released this week, The Woman In Me, I decided to do a song spotlight for "3." Seriously, pop news has been filled to the brim with this bombshell memoir this week. "3" is the first and only single from Spears' greatest hits compilation, The Singles Collection, back in 2009. Let's put the spotlight on this song!
Scandalous lyrics, electropop perfection, and classic Britney vocals. It's a fun song. Not surprised it went to number one on the Hot 100. It had hit written all over it. This song really solidified Spears' comeback after Circus released a year prior. It also was a good bridge between the electropop of Blackout and Circus to the dubstep-fueled sound and themes of Femme Fatale released in 2011.
A complete departure from her early pop/R&B singles, "3" is a fast-paced, dance tune with the infectiousness that Spears is known for. It's sexy and teeters on being raunchy with its suggestive, tongue-in-cheek lyrics about a genital jamboree with 3 people instead of a vanilla twosome. The narrator further pushes the adventure by suggesting a fourth person join on the floor! Progressive stuff. It'll have you singing along even if you're a virgin with it's "Peter, Paul, and Mary" hook.
The production here made Britney a career-defining single that proved very popular giving her her 3rd number one single! The 3's didn't just let up as the song is a modest 3:33. Not overstaying its welcome, but not leaving you wanting more. Just hitting you with an unforgettable groove and hook that we still dance to almost 15 years later. Proving Spears is and always will be pop royalty.
Rating: S Rank. Living in sin is the new thing.
